The group will continue to meet monthly. Depending on the size of the group we will meet either in one of our homes or in a room at the Rose City Park United Methodist Church. Our goal is to have a quiet, comfortable place where people can hear each other and share feelings, thoughts and questions in a supportive environment.

The group is intended to serve anyone who has suffered a loss recently or in the past and is looking for support in navigating a new reality, sharing their experience or finding resources to cope with grief, loss or the challenges of living on one’s own.

There is no moderator for this group. We are simply people who share the experience of having lost someone dear to us and are looking for support or to provide support to others in a similar situation.

We will be discussing "North Woods" by Daniel Mason, published in 2023. Historical Fiction. North Woods is the story of a place; a yellow house deep in the woods of western Massachusetts and its succession of occupants, human and otherwise, who leave their mark on the property over the span of four centuries. “North Woods focuses on the lives of the house’s inhabitants while encompassing American history, natural history, the relentless march of time, and the cycle of seasons.” Historical fiction.

The book group is open to all NEV members and volunteers.

Considering end-of-life realities can be overwhelming and easily set aside. Let’s talk about making plans and asking questions about these decisions. (Note: This VIEWS Conversation does not provide legal advice, but instead offers a safe environment to explore and share feelings, fears, and thoughts that surround end-of-life issues.)

Facilitated conversation by 2 trained facilitators who have been trained to talk about topics related to aging. This is a safe space for everyone to share and explore topics in greater depth, and offers an opportunity to connect with others in our Village community.

Presented by Cascadia Health: Conversations on Aging in partnership with NE Village.

All volunteers are encouraged to attend this In Service training where we will be learning more about how to have difficult conversations. There will also be time for volunteers to share personal experiences and pose questions about difficult conversations you have encountered in your work as a Village volunteer. For example, how to respond to someone who shares some difficult news about a health diagnosis.

Presented by Julie Bernstein, NE Village volunteer and former physician assistant in geriatric and hospital medicine.

As new volunteers and members come to Northeast Village, more and more of them tell us
they heard about the village from a friend, neighbor or relative. It’s great that word of mouth is
working so well to advertise NEV. At the same time, our organized outreach – via scheduled
information sessions, talks to neighborhood associations and social organizations, and
participation in street fairs and farmers markets – is still critical to bringing us new members
and volunteers. And we really need more folks to help with these efforts.

If you enjoy meeting new people and would like to share your experience of our Village, longtime NE Village volunteers Julie Granger and Jane Braunger are hosting a tea at Julie‘s where they will share information about our current (and future!) outreach efforts and how you can support them. When you register on the calendar, you’ll get advance information.

Questions? Contact Julie (julebert@g2online.org; 971-266-7670) or Jane (janebraunger@gmail.com; 503-880-0339)

We look forward to meeting with you!

As we age some of us have family or friends who will provide care or support for us if needed, and some of us do not. Even if we have children, they may not be available or able to provide support. Discuss your feelings, experiences and concerns surrounding aging without family or social support. Share ideas about ways to strengthen your social and safety networks.
