COMING UP IN OUR VILLAGE

What: Book Talk – “Immigration Update: What’s happening at the USA Mexico border and here in Portland?” by Pat Rumer

When:  Monday, June 29th from 10 to 11 via Zoom

Pat Rumer has been involved with Guatemala for fifty years.  In the past five years she has volunteered in Arizona with humanitarian organizations helping immigrants.  She is the author of a book:  Choices:  Death, Life and Migration (2018) available from Amazon or directly from author.

Pat will provide information about migration during the Covid 19 pandemic; what is happening to people in detention centers and continuing changes in immigration law from the current administration with special attention to asylum seekers.  She will also talk about alternatives to detention.

Finally, she will share some personal stories about people she met in Arizona and Portland

  • creative actions people are taking to assist immigrants

  • the ways that everyone can get involved.

  • Organizations and legislators who are helping immigrants

She would like to know your questions in advance so that she can focus on what interests you and what you consider important about this critical societal issue? Once you sign up on the calendar please email Pat Rumer at:  tedad06@yahoo.com

Patio Picnics: As we enter summer and have the opportunity to spend more time outside, would you enjoy a patio picnic (lunch or dinner) with another Village member?

To host a picnic you need to have space to accommodate one or two other people at a minimum of 6 feet apart.  Each member will provide their own dishes, utensils, napkins, food and beverage.

Any village member can participate as long as you have a space to host or can travel to another member's home or a park if you want to picnic there.  To join in the summer outdoor fun call the office (503-895-2750) or Julie Granger (971-266-7670) and give the following information.

1.  Whether you can host or not.

2.  Would you prefer a lunch or dinner picnic?

3.  Your name and number.

You will be matched and together you can plan your picnic!

LOOKING FOR RIDES

Cab Voucher: Hollywood Senior Center recently received a number of cab vouchers from the City of Portland to be used during the month of June. WHAT’S HAPPENING WITH COVID

Oregon Reopening: Visit the Governor’s page to learn the most up to date news on COVID19. Several things have changed in the last week. Multnomah County moved into phase one reopening on the 19th and several other counties are now in phase two.

Face Masks:Face coverings are required for indoor public spaces for Multnomah, Clackamas, Washington, Marion, Polk, Hood River, and Lincoln counties, effective June 24th. Children under 12 years of age, as well as people with a disability or a medical condition that prevent them from wearing a face covering, are not required to wear one.

Do you have one? Do you still need one? Might you be willing and able to make masks for others in our Village community?

If you fall into either of the last two categories, please contact Margaret Baldwin at margaretnepdxvillage@gmail.com

NE Village Conducts First Virtual Meeting for Entire Community

Did you attend the “all-Village” meeting on June 18th? Last Thursday, 40 members and volunteers gathered to reconnect, engage and learn about the state of our Village. There was lively conversation about how to remain stable and enduring during 2020. The breakout groups focused on looking ahead as NEV evolves as a community during this year's “waves.” There will be a survey for evaluation of the meeting and a follow-up report coming soon.

In the News: Did you see the latest Hollywood Star? Our Village made an appearance.
