About this event

The title “Disaster Sanitation: You Survive the Earthquake, But Die of Dysentery” sounds funny. Okay, it IS funny. Tragically, it describes a common truth. In most major disasters, more people die of dysentery (severe diarrhea) and other infections, than from the primary disaster. But this is entirely preventable! All you need to know is WHY it happens, and simple steps to take, before and during emergencies.

Presenter: Merilee Karr, M.D., M.F.A., is a retired family physician. Her favorite part of medical practice was teaching people to save their own lives – so Disaster Sanitation fits right in. She discovered this neglected, but urgent, topic through Neighborhood Emergency Teams (NET) in Portland, and has been teaching and researching it for 5 years. She is also the Board President of PHLUSH (Personal Hygiene Lets Us Stay Human). We advocate for sanitation justice, including public restrooms, sustainable sanitation, and disaster sanitation.
