About this event
Our selection for May is fiction: The Island of Missing Trees by British-Turkish novelist, Elif Shafak. Published August 2021, 368 pages.
"The Island of Missing Trees" is an original and magical book of imagination about the people and natural environment of Cyprus. It is set in two different time periods: the 1970s and the 2010s. The story takes place in Cyprus and London unveiling the troubling and turbulent history of the Island of Cyprus. A fig tree is an unusual central narrator, growing through a tavern and winding its way through the roof, the tree observes the comings and goings of a young teenage couple. Shafek writes of pain and heartbreak through the prism of hope, renewal and healing.
